2. Division Quotient – the answer to a division problem.
Dividend – the number being divided.
Divisor – the number doing the dividing.

Compatible Numbers
Numbers that are easy to compute mentally.
Example of using compatible numbers in division:
310 ÷ 8
Adjust 310 to 320 because 32 ÷ 8 = 4.
320 ÷ 8 = 40.

4. Remainder
The part that is left over after completing a division problem.
The remainder should NEVER be the same or larger than the divisor!

5. Divisible
A number is divisible by another number if when it is divided there is no remainder. Examples:
35 ÷ 7 = is divisible by 7 because there is no remainder.
24 ÷ 8 = is divisible by 8 because there is no remainder.

6. Mean
Mean – A fancy word for the average. The average of a set of data is found by adding all the numbers together and dividing by the total of numbers in the data.
Example: 3, 5, 3, 5, 4 – these numbers added together equal 20. The next step is to count the numbers in the data. There are 5 numbers. Then divide –
20 ÷ 5 = 4. The mean (average) is 4!
