1 Fast Facts Surgeons are the highest-paid profession in the United States, making an average of $288,000 per year (CNN Money) Americans work more, on average than any other country in the world. Last year, more than 25 million Americans — 20.5 percent of the total workforce — reported they worked at least 49 hours a week. Eleven million of those said they worked more than 59 hours a week. (ABC News)
