Innovation Challenge Every business starts with an idea, but to be successful you need more than just a good idea. Starting from a common challenge question, students will work in groups of 3–5 to go through the steps in the engineering design and product development process - from solution brainstorming, to market and production considerations, and finally to intellectual property protection. The activity will wrap up with each group presenting a minute pitch of their product and business. Welcome to the Innovation Challenge

Teacher Tips The Cool Kid IP Challenge can take up as much or as little class time as you have to dedicate to it (minimum ~5 hours). Look through the “CS-MSP002-Activity Slides (3-5)” slide deck (either the power point slides or the pdf file) and how much time you have to dedicate to this project. The notes section of each slide contain information/suggestions on lesson flow, additional examples, and further explanations. Slides with a blue background in the “CS-MSP002-Activity Slides (3-5)” are intended to be shared with the students. Slides with a white background are for the teacher only. We suggest introducing the students to the challenge in a general fashion with slide 1 from the “CS-MSP002-Activity Slides (3-5)”. If possible, allow them some time for the challenge Warm Up activity. After that continue introducing the challenge by sharing slides so that the students get a big picture idea of the activity. We also suggest beginning each of the steps outlined in slide 4 (challenge statement, brainstorming, etc.) with a quick review of the slide that discusses the approach and goals for that specific activity. At the very end we’ve included a set of slides that can be used as a template for the presentation if you find this appropriate for your needs. We’ve also included some example slides from past participants.
