DEMOCRACY DEFINITION: a system of government by which political power is held & used by the people ; ruled by Popular Sovereignty (people have authority) ; Citizens exercise power by voting for leaders of their government ; Citizens have inalienable rights EXAMPLE: Athens (direct democracy) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Athens was the first civilization to empower their citizens by allowing them to have direct power through the democratic process. (note: only native born, free men over 18 considered citizens.) EXAMPLE: Rome (indirect democracy/ republic) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Rome allowed for elected representatives to write laws on behalf of the people.

DEFINITION: The development of industries for the machine production of goods using resources such as water & coal power, iron ore, rivers, and harbors. EXAMPLE: After going through the Enclosure Movement and the Agricultural Revolution, England is the first country to Industrialize. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Industrialization allows England to become technologically developed, and for rapid urbanization. EXAMPLE: Due to the War of 1812, the United States realized it too could become a strong industrialized nation. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The industrialization of the United States is fueled by ingenuity, capitalism, and a large work force.
