About the Magna Carta
Not only was King John reluctant to sign the Magna Carta, but soon after signing it, he refused to be bound by its terms. John’s renunciation of the Magna Carta caused a civil war between the kings and the nobles. However, the conflict was brief because John died in 1216 (the year following the signing of the Magna Carta). John’s successor, King Henry III, signed and accepted the Magna Carta. And so, during the 1200s, it became established as English law.
