Multistep Synthesis… In real life chemistry we usually work towards the synthesis of a desired compound rather than reacting two compounds just to see what happens (thanks to the work of previous scientists we already know the answer)

Multistep Synthesis… Planning how to do this is called Retrosynthesis.
First we must identify all the functional groups within our compound. Br O OH

Multistep Synthesis… We then consider the possible reactions that will form these functional groups: Br: halogenation of alkene substitution of alcohol COOH: oxidation of 1o alcohol oxidation of aldehyde Are there any reactions that would interact? Avoid using these

Decide on the order of reaction: Oxidation of aldehyde Halogenation of double bond O H

Reflux H2SO4 catalyst O OH

Multistep Synthesis… Then give your reaction equations: 2. OH O Br OH
