1 TIPS REGARDING FORMATTING
HLP / ECIST winter support lessons learned (1) Learning from Intensive Support over winter – listening to those we worked with What worked well? What could be better? What impact was had? Methodology Five Focus Sites: qualitative interviews with staff who worked directly with ECIST / HLP; data analysis on key metrics (4 hr wait, Bed occupancy, Length of Stay and Long Length of Stay – 21 days or more) Nine interviews conducted with representation across all sites London-wide: survey monkey shared with AEDB chairs, CEOs, COOs and Medical Directors 19 surveys received Focused areas: interviews and data analysis Barnet Enfield Haringey Camden Islington City Barking and Dagenham Hackney Havering Newham Redbridge Tower Hamlets Waltham Forest Croydon Richmond Wandsworth Kingston Merton Sutton Brent Ealing H&F Harrow Hounslow K&C Westminster Hillingdon Lambeth Bromley Bexley Greenwich Lewisham Southwark North Middlesex Barnet Hospital Whipps Cross Hospital BHRUT Queen Elizabeth Hospital TIPS REGARDING FORMATTING Use graphic elements, like boxes, to highlight each section of your poster. Use space to create emphasis. Use no more than 2-3 colours, and dark type on a light background. Conclusions first, keep them short and to the point in the upper left-hand corner. Simple graphs are effective graphs. Make the text big enough to read. Use Arial or Lato font. ALWAYS left align the text. Keep your headings the same size and style throughout. Avoid chaos, keep the layout easy for the eye to follow. Images and graphs say more than words, so keep your poster visual. If you are using a photo, avoid web images – use at least 150 dpi, but no more than 300 dpi. Don’t forget any other logos where necessary. Methodology Focused sites: interviews and data analysis on key metrics (4 hr wait, Bed occupancy, Length of Stay and Long Length of Stay – 21 days or more) Nine interviews conducted with representation across all sites All sites: survey monkey shared with AEDB chairs, CEOs, COOs and Medical Directors 19 surveys received Survey findings: the quantitative feedback Support at all points of flow Range of types of support High levels of satisfaction 80% of respondents felt that winter support had met or exceeded expectations, 10% said it fell below expectations and 10% were disappointed – we are following up on these 20% of responses. Overall staff valued the support – and asked for even more practical assistance – as well as continued introduction to good practice and to people who deliver it (ie building relationships between areas)

2 TIPS REGARDING FORMATTING
HLP / ECIST winter support lessons learned (2) What worked well (surveys and interviews) Introducing teams to new ways of working New tools (eg MADE, Perfect Week, LLOS reviews) New pathways Being on the ground – working hand in hand with the teams and helping them to make change happen Being clear about purpose and focus – making sure everyone knew why ECIST / HLP were there Working across the whole system Helping operational teams to engage with clinicians – including in MDTs Enabling and encouraging rather than directing or leading – challenging and supportive questions Brokering introductions to good practice and to people, teams and organisations who are implementing the practice “reassurance and challenge” Survey respondent What could be better (surveys and interviews) More time from the support team – and more hands-on support when there Clarity of purpose and reason for engagement Start early – not ‘winter’ support but year-round support for improvement Support people to manage the complexity and variation across systems and local areas Brokering good links with other support offers already on site Time spent building in-house sustainability Working with leadership to ensure top-down commitment and therefore sustainability of improvements “more time on the shop floor and more hands on approach” Survey respondent TIPS REGARDING FORMATTING Use graphic elements, like boxes, to highlight each section of your poster. Use space to create emphasis. Use no more than 2-3 colours, and dark type on a light background. Conclusions first, keep them short and to the point in the upper left-hand corner. If you are using a photo, avoid web images – use at least 150 dpi, but no more than 300 dpi. Don’t forget any other logos where necessary. Impact Reduction in LOS during support Increase in confidence of staff to drive improvements Early days to see improvements for patients “greater confidence in our approach to managing long stays, particularly when engaging with clinical teams to become involved” Survey respondent What next Continue to review Intensive Support offer to ensure it meets need Share outputs of this review with UEC Board, UEC Director for London and HLP / ECIST teams Regular (eg every 6 months) learning process
