Kitchen Safety Jigsaw Notes Review
2
Cleanliness in the Kitchen
Be careful when mixing two or more cleaning products- could cause poisonous gas More accidents occur in the kitchen than any other room in the house
3
Cooking Food Safely DANGER ZONE: 40- 140 degrees
When thawing large cuts of meat, use the refrigerator Eating rare ground beef is MORE risky that rare steak (more surface area) You CANNOT tell if a food is contaminated by the way it looks, smells, or tastes
4
Food must be cooked entirely to be safe
When uncovering a pan, always lift up the far edge of the cover first (steam on your face) Meat, poultry and eggs can often be contaminated with salmonella NEVER thaw food on the counter, use the fridge or microwave fruits and veggies should be washed to remove dirt and insecticides (bug repellent)
5
Storing Food Safely Cold temperatures will slow bacterial growth (but NOT stop it completely) Quick storage of food helps to preserve quality Eggs should be stored in their original container Meat and poultry should be bagged separately at the grocery store
6
mold WILL grow on refrigerated food, just more slowly
Heavy pots and pans should be stored on low shelves Large quantities of perishable food should be stored in shallow pans in the fridge
7
Kitchen Safety Basics Keep hands dry when using electrical equipment
Turn off any electrical appliance that overheats or sparks ASAP Do not touch plumbing and electrical at the same time If someone is in contact with electricity, or being shocked, do NOT touch them
8
sharp knives are safer than dull knives
slant a knife blade away from you at all times Do not touch broken glass with bare fingers- use a broom and dustpan
9
Preventing Fires and Burns
Always use dry potholders (not papertowels) when handling hot pots and pans A damp oven mitt on a hot pan could cause a serious burn (steam) Never put water on a grease fire! pour salt or baking soda on flames put a cover on the pan
10
