THE MINISTRY of THE HOLY SPIRIT JoLynn Gower Spring 2019 Lesson 6

VERSE FOR THE JOURNEY John 16: "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 "He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 "All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

COMMEMORATING SINAI? Maimonides taught that Pentecost was 50 days after leaving Egypt/ the giving of the Law on Sinai Exodus 12:2,3 "This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year to you. This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year to you. Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, 'On the tenth of this month they are each one to take a lamb for themselves, according to their fathers' households, a lamb for each household. Exodus 12:6 'You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight. Exodus 19:1 In the third month after the sons of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that very day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.

ABOUT PENTECOST Pentecost didn’t begin in the book of Acts!
Leviticus 23:15-16 'You shall also count for yourselves from the day after the sabbath, from the day when you brought in the sheaf of the wave offering; there shall be seven complete sabbaths. You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh sabbath; then you shall present a new grain offering to the LORD. Remember that all sabbaths weren’t Saturdays; some were high holy sabbaths Numbers 28:26 'Also on the day of the first fruits, when you present a new grain offering to the LORD in your Feast of Weeks, you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no laborious work.

GIVING THE LAW Exodus 19:10-12, 16 The LORD also said to Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments; and let them be ready for the third day, for on the third day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, 'Beware that you do not go up on the mountain or touch the border of it; whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death”. So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.

NEW TESTAMENT COMPARISON
Hebrews 12:18-24 For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind, and to the blast of a trumpet and the sound of words which sound was such that those who heard begged that no further word be spoken to them. For they could not bear the command, "IF EVEN A BEAST TOUCHES THE MOUNTAIN, IT WILL BE STONED.” And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, "I AM FULL OF FEAR and trembling.” But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel.

AFTER THE RESURRECTION
Jesus called his disciples to Galilee and gave them the Great Commission (Matthew 28) But He told His disciples to return to Jerusalem and wait until the power came Acts 1:1-5 ..about all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen. To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God. Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you heard of from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

STILL SEEKING EARTHLY Acts 1:6-8 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, "Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." Baptized: baptizo from bapto: to be fully wet; by extension, to be overwhelmed This baptizing was going to be something apart from their initial belief in Jesus because the Holy Spirit had not yet been poured out on the church

THE DAY OF PENTECOST Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. Suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing them-selves, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. Exodus 19:16, 18 So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. ..because the LORD descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently.

THE ALLEGORY Galatians 4:21-27 Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not listen to the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bond woman and one by the free woman. But the son by the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise. This is allegorically speaking, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children who are to be slaves; she is Hagar. Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem above is free; she is our mother. SARAH FREE MT. WIND AND FIRE OT: Spirit: ruach: breath or wind Sinai
NT: Spirit: pneuma: breath or wind Pentecost The fire at Pentecost was at one place– the top of the mountain that they couldn’t touch on penalty of death The fire at Pentecost in Acts distributed to everyone – and the mountain was not one that could be touched From this time forward, the Spirit was actively working in the lives of believers, empowering gifts, sealing, serving as a pledge, interpreting scripture, helping us pray The Spirit works with each person to help develop those particular ministries and gifts that God desires
