Verb Moods
Authors use verb moods to create different effects. Each mood gives the sentence a different purpose. There are five verb moods.

Indicative Mood
Indicative mood is used to make a statement.
I like to play sports.

Interrogative Mood
Interrogative mood is used to ask a question.

Imperative Mood
The imperative mood is used to make commands, instructions, or requests.

Subjunctive Mood
The subjunctive mood is used when making a wish or hypothetical statement. *think: what if?
What if I were
to live on an
island far away?

Subjunctive Mood
The key part to subjunctive is that it CAN NOT occur. AND, change the verb was to were EX: If I were you, I’d just go tell my mom about it.
As hard you might try, you can’t be someone else!!
EX: I wish I was at the beach right this instant! WRONG
I WISH I WERE AT THE BEACH RIGHT THIS INSTANT! CORRECT!

Conditional Mood
The conditional mood is used when one event is dependent on another event happening. *think: if/then cause/effect
