Protozoan Nelson Barahona Alejandra Manjarres Period 7

2 Table of Content General characteristics Nutrition and defense
Movement and Reproduction Respiration and exertion The different types

3 General characteristics
Usually motile Heterotrophs Eukaryotes Unicellular Found in almost all bodies of water

4 Nutrition and defense Usually refer to other animals for food.
Get food by hunting and storage. eat any viruses or bacterial objects that it kills. to prevent swelling, the vacuole, when full, goes to the edge of the cell and squeezes the water out.

5 Movement These bacterial organelles move by using different factors.
Some may use cilia while others might use flagella or even pseudopods The last type of movement is none at all Most of them move anyways

6 Reproduction This type of bacteria perform asexual reproduction.
Even though they mostly reproduced asexually, cells with half the DNA needed may create an entire new cell with another similar cell, making it sexual reproduction.

7 Respiration This takes place when the cell receives oxygen.
The cell receives the oxygen needed when food particles are oxidized. The energy and organic materials received is used to maintain the cell and build the cell.

8 Excretion When unneeded substances are found in the cell, than the cell falls into this process. The way protozoan do this is by getting food vacuoles and carrying the substance to the surface. There the substance is let out.

9 Breaking them down It can be broken down into four group they are:
Flagellate Amoeboid Ciliate Sporozoa

10 Flagellate Move by using a flagella.
Eat other organisms and absorbs molecules through membrane. Release a poisons substance for defense. Excretion is committed through anal pore. Primary component of marine food chain. Example: Trypanosoma gambiense (sleeping sickness)

11 Amoeboid/Rhizopods Move using a pseudopods. Not unicellular.
Eat by using there pseudopods. Reproduce by binary fission. Transparent dome for defense Example: Amoeba proteus

12 Ciliate Move with cilia
for defense, they have several layers around them. Respiration can anaerobic or aerobic have a oral grove used for eating. Similar to a mouth. Example: Paramecium (Paramecium caudatum)

13 Sporozoa Do not move Reproduces both ways in different host.
Tucks into red blood cells for defense. Parasites, special organelles let it invade the host. Example: Plasmodium vivax (Causes Malaria)
