Chris McCandless documented his adventures in an album of photographs and journals, which he gave to Wayne Westerberg before he departed for Alaska. By leaving this album with Westerberg, McCandless created a concrete trail of his past that Krakauer was able to follow. Without the album, McCandless might have faded into obscurity like many others who have lost their lives in the Alaskan wilderness; the album contributed greatly to his story.
