Folding Dresser Design Brief
Example 1
2
problem Folding and putting away clothes takes a very long time
This problem needs to be solved because, as Lisa Daves, a working mom, says, "Folding clothes is very time consuming and takes away from time with my family." I took a survey of 50 people at random and 42 out of 50 of the people surveyed, agreed this was a problem that needs to be solved
3
solution Create a dresser that can fold and put your clothes away for you
4
Criteria & constraints
Should be simple to use Should not require lots of attention Should not take a lot of your time Needs to be affordable Robot parts can be costly There is a maximum manufacturing budget
5
A Japanese folding method that takes a little less time
Previous solutions A Japanese folding method that takes a little less time Sorting baskets (Didn't work because you still spent the same amount of time folding) Hiring someone to do it for you (Didn't work because not everyone can afford it)
6
Similar ideas A machine has been created that folds your clothes for you but it required attention and doesn't fold all clothing items
7
Access to tech and materials
I would need access to robotic parts and a wood workshop to create my solution Access to tech and materials
8
Estimated Budget The estimated budget to make this dresser is $800
9
Materials and cost Total cost to make the dresser is $760.55
Wood for outer dresser: $68.35 Drawers: $34.18 Handles: $20.82 Small Robotic Arms: $200 Large Robotic Arm: $300 Wiring: $130.73 Plastic: $6.47 Total cost to make the dresser is $760.55 Materials and cost
13
profit I plan to sell this dresser for $1,000
This would give me a profit of $239.45
