3 Design problem How can you charge your device? Remote location
Camping, cabins Devices run out of battery power How can you charge your device? Use devices in the case on an emergency  JEREMY

4 Product summary Steam powered USB device charger
Cannot connect to a grid Can be used in remote locations Alternative way to produce energy  JEN

5 Alternative ideas Solar Powered Chargers Stirling Engine
Body Heat Chargers Portable Battery Packs Crank Chargers Marty wants to do this slide The HomeStove converts heat from the fire into usable electricity giving owners an instant power outlet.

Battery pack intakes 5 volts from regulator Fujutsu battery circuit Output to USB ports MARTY Figure 1: Electronic Circuit

7 Design process : Electronics
Voltage needed was known: 5V per USB port 7805 Regulator Chip  Regulates voltage down to 5 V 1N4001 Diode Fujitsu battery pack circuitry 3 USB Ports 4A1498 Fuse Switch Cooling fan Micro-USB alternative charging 5V for each USB port , USB ports require 5V Researched data sheet for 1n4001 diode states that it can handle up to 50V and a typical phone battery is only 5V, this gives us a factor of safety of 10 Dr. Comeau suggested we implement this regulator chip into our design Battery pack enables us to use the device without anything plugged in, battery pack stores power Max. current for all 3 USB ports is 3 Amps. Which is the max. output of the battery. (data sheet, safely output 3A without being damaged). Total wattage is 15W total. Safety label : don’t use anything more than 3Amps / 15W (I.e. don’t use splitters) Fuse protects battery from being overdrawn from (battery damage, would heat up) Subcontract fujitsu battery circuit and use their circuitry for the battery pack Marty wants to do this slide Switch would trip when when too much current; rated at 3A

8 DESIGN PROCESS: piston system
Double work  our piston is getting pushed from both sides, dependent on the position of  CAM

9 DESIGN PROCESS: BOILER
Pressure Gauge Top can be unscrewed Refill the boiler when water runs out Safety release valve User can depressurize the system Rated for 35 psi 1.5L capacity  JEREMY

10 Design process: materials
Casing Materials  Zytel Plus Nylon Resin Melting temperature 283°C Hose Materials  White Silicon Rubber Tubing Maximum temperature 260℃ Fiberglass insulation divider  R-13 Kraft Faced Insulation Face insulation uses kraft paper vapor barrier to control moisture transmission Aluminum, Copper Various uses in steam engine Stainless Steel Used in boiler  BREANNA

14 Problems encountered Hard water deposits Number of USB ports
Cooling electronics Boiler design Cylinder-Piston design Insulation Had problems with the boiler design; spoke to an engineer BREANNA Hard Water Deposits : make the device easily disassembled so it can be cleaned; Number of USB Ports: Had a difficult time deciding how many USB ports we wanted to have; the fujustu battery circurt data sheet says we can supply 3A to the USB ports. Therefore, Cooling Electronics: wanted to fully ensure the electronics did not get too hot because of

15 DESIGN PROCESS: SAFETY
Keeping electronics dry Fiberglass insulation between electronics and piston system Warning labels To ensure user safety 4A1498 Fuse Switch Trips when too much current is drawn from USB ports Condenser is insulated Too avoid overheating Hose Length Ensure hose are long enough so device does not overheat HOSE LENGTH 2FEET OR GREATER JEN Fuse switch is to protect battery within circuit  What did we insult the condenser with???

16 Boiler thickness calculations

17 Pressure calculation  CAM

18 Free body diagrams  MARTY

19 Stress calculations in connecting rod and pins
 MARTY

20 MARKET VALUE Based on competitor pricing and estimated building cost:
Estimated Manufacturing Price: $15-$20 + labour Estimated Retail Price: $25-$30 Estimated retail price based on prices of competitors (solar panels, biolights) Estimated manufacturing price based on price of materials used BREANNA

21 Schedule Finished project on time Fell behind on prototype building
Research lasted longer than anticipated Calculations lasted longer than anticipated  Jen

22 Engineering Applications
Thermodynamics Cylinder-Piston systems Strength of Materials Stress calculations on connecting rods Electric Circuits Circuitry analysis Design I Gantt Chart, Design process, Project planning Graphics and Fundamentals AutoCAD, Relaying ideas Physics 120  BREANNA

23 Conclusion Mathematically correct Teamwork Organizational Skills
Mathematic analysis shows that our device would run Teamwork Organizational Skills Project Management Thinking Outside the Box  JEREMY
