2 Manifest Destiny Manifest Destiny: the idea that the U.S. had the right to control all land in North America from the Atlantic to Pacific It is obvious (manifest) that this was God’s plan (destiny) Indian Removal Act of 1830 – U.S. Gvt. force Native Americans off land Trail of Tears = Cherokee march of 800 miles from Georgia to Oklahoma 1845 – Texas annexed by U.S.; leads to Mexican-American War; U.S. wins TX, CA, UT, AZ, parts of CO & NM Gadsen Purchase (small area in southern AZ) completes U.S. boundaries

3 U.S. Civil War CIVIL WAR DOES NOT BEGIN BECAUSE OF SLAVERY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Civil War is about power – who has more power: federal gvt. or state gvt.? Southern states secede & form their own country (Confederate States of America) Lincoln issues Emancipation Proclamation
