2 The Story of the Egg Father Rooster and Mother Hen wanted a family, so Mother Hen laid an egg.

3 The inside of the egg looks like this- yolk The yolk is the food for the unborn chick. egg cell The white spot is the egg cell. The egg cell is where the chick grows. albumen The clear part around the yolk holds water for the unborn chick. shell

4 The egg cell becomes the baby chick. Before the egg is hatched, its called an embryo. Mother Hen takes care of her chick by sitting on the egg and keeping it warm. Mother Hen turns her eggs and spreads her feathers over them to protect her chicks.

5 It takes 21 days for a chick to hatch. Day 1 Day 2 On day 2, the heart begins to take shape and beat, and the ears begin to form.

6 The journey continues… Day 3 Day 4 The tongue, tail, wing and leg buds appear. The chicks toes are showing!

7 Our chick is growing… Day 5 Day 6 His organs and leg bones are forming. His beak and wing is visible.

8 He is getting bigger everyday… Day 7 Day 8 His feathers are showing up.

9 He is getting bigger everyday… Day 9 Day 10 Now he has eyelids, claws, and his comb.

10 He is getting bigger everyday… Day 11 Day 12 Hes growing bigger!

11 He is getting bigger everyday… Day 13 Day 14 His bones are getting stronger.

12 He is getting bigger everyday… Day 15 Day 16 His scales, claws, and beak are firming up now.

13 He is getting bigger everyday… Day 17 Day 18 His beak is turning and getting ready to peck through the shell.

14 He is getting bigger everyday… Day 19 Day 20 He is almost ready to come out of his shell!
