Crime and Punishment GCSE History exam –Top Tips
The exam is 1 hour and 15 minutes. Keep an eye on the clock! Answer all the questions on the exam paper. There are 6 questions in total Question 6 will be about crime and the East End Of London. Read the questions carefully. (dates) Provide a conclusion to any question that requires a judgement. If the question has sources : you must refer to them and, if appropriate, quote from them. Include your own knowledge as much as possible.

Easy to remember! There are 3 time periods (eras) to remember.
Medieval : c. 500 to 1500 Early Modern : 1500 to 1750 Modern : 1750 to present There are 3 key themes. causes of crime Combatting crime punishing crime

Exam Technique Q 1 (4) – You do not have to identify similarity/ difference across all 3 pictures. Focus on what changed and what stayed the same. Q2 (6) – You must refer to both sources. Focus on what is being studied. No right/ wrong answer. Q3 (5) – Give as much relevant detail as you can. Several short paragraphs.

Exam Technique Q4 (9) – Explain in several paragraphs. Key word ‘because’. Q5 (16+4) – Focus on change. Several paragraphs. Key phrases: During the medieval/ early modern/ modern period This changed in the…..because….. Q6a (8) – Describe 2 main features only. Give as much relevant detail as you can. Two paragraphs. Q6b (12) Explain the link. Focus on change.
