Fiscal Year Printed, published and sold Government of Canada publications Administered Crown Copyright and Licensing services until November 18, 2013 Assigned ISBNs and Government of Canada (GC) catalogue numbers to GC publications as per delegated authority Acquired and catalogued GC publications in available formats Produced the Weekly Checklist of GC publications in paper and electronic formats Distributed copies of tangible format publications to Depository Libraries Hosted and provided bibliographic access to electronic GC publications through the publications.gc.ca website Operated under the authority of the Communications Policy of the GC Introduced new procedures on Publishing Closed Publishing Program and Crown Copyright and Licensing services Disposed of remaining physical inventory

1. Government of Canada Procedures for Publishing Effective as of June 1, 2013 Applies to all departments listed in Schedules I, I.1 and II of the Financial Administration Act States that departments may only undertake volume printing under exceptional circumstances (e.g. required by the minister or by legislation, information relating to public safety or security, required to meet the needs of the target audience) Requires departments to maintain an index of publications produced and to forward it to us on a bi-annual basis Requires departments to forward copies of all publications in portable electronic formats to PDS Requires departments to follow PDS guidelines related to information that must be included in publications We encourage departments to continue sending PDS tangible formats of publications, as these will continue to be catalogued and added to the central database

New look and feel for publications.gc.ca July 2013 Migration to the GC Web Experience Toolkit (WET) template Facilitates compliance with the Web Standards for the GC Standard on Web Accessibility Standard on Web Usability Standard on Web Interoperability Presents a more unified Web experience for users Menu updated to group information more logically More opportunity to feature publications on the home page

3. Special Activities Digitized over 100 historical publications from the PDS collection which were never made available electronically Interesting fact - Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms of Canada was the 4th most downloaded English-language publication from our catalogue in the fiscal year Many activities related to inventory liquidation for warehoused publications More to come!

4. Decentralization of Crown Copyright and Licensing Since November 18, 2013, PDS no longer administers Crown Copyright and Licensing for Government of Canada departments and agencies Permission (if required) to reproduce GC publications must go through the author department, and as a result of decentralization each department may now have their own procedures and approach 5. End of the printed version of the Weekly Checklist (WCL) Last printed issue: (December 27, 2013) Three special issues with commemorative covers and introductions detailing the history of the WCL and the DSP were issued in Dec. 2013 Electronic versions are available in our e-collection

6. Decentralization of Publication Distribution Since April 1, 2014, PDS no longer sells, warehouses or distributes tangible format publications on behalf of the Government of Canada (GC) Consequently, PDS no longer collects quantities of these publications for free distribution to participating libraries Tangible formats of publications must be requested directly from the author departments PDS will continue to catalogue publications in tangible formats if we receive them, and they will be included in the Weekly Checklist Some departments have decided to continue to distribute hard-copy publications to previous subscribers and have had to find alternative distribution methods

7. External Data-Sharing Projects Canadian Government Information Private LOCKSS Network (CGI-PLN) Canadian analogue to US Digital Federal Depository Library Program Collaboration between 10 organizations, including 8 Canadian universities DSP provides bibliographic data and CGI-PLN harvests publications, keeping multiple redundant copies DSP is targeting quarterly updates to LOCKSS Government and Legislative Libraries Online Publications (GALLOP) Portal Developed and maintained by the Association of Parliamentary Libraries in Canada (APLIC) Contributions from Canadian provincial/territorial legislative libraries and the DSP DSP provides monthly updates Approximately 1/3 of all items in the GALLOP Portal are from the DSP

The Year Ahead – Continue to assign ISBNs and Government of Canada (GC) catalogue numbers to GC publications Continue to acquire and catalogue GC publications in available formats Produce the Weekly Checklist of GC publications in electronic format only Releases lists of publications recently added to our collection both recent through the Weekly Checklist and older publications through the Supplementary Checklists Host and provide bibliographic access to electronic GC publications through the publications.gc.ca website Operate under the authority of the Government of Canada Communications Policy as well as the Government of Canada Procedures for Publishing
