What is a Bhikkhu? What does the word Bhikkhu mean? What time does the monk’s day begin? What is the first activity of the day? Briefly explain. Explain the two kinds of meditation undertaken. What do the monks do at 7.30am? What does the monk do during his ‘personal times?’ What time is the main meal eaten? When should this meal finish? Where does the food come from? What are the monks dependent on, bearing in mind they have no money.

The beginning of the Sangha
When the Buddha had achieved enlightenment he went to find his 5 fellow ascetics who had abandoned him At first they wanted to ignore him because they thought he was greedy and had abandoned the quest for enlightenment but were so surprised by how amazing he looked that they forgot and spoke to him.

Buddha taught the 5 monks about what he had discovered (the Dharma) They all asked to join the Buddha and soon all became enlightened ones (arahants) Others joined the Buddha and eventually the Buddha sent them out to spread the teachings themselves and a community was born

A Monk’s Personal Belongings
Each Buddhist monk is allowed these things: a begging/alms bowl a belt a razor a staff a tooth pick a robe. Can you come up with only 6 things that would allow you to survive in today’s world?
