Identify the drug that makes tobacco addictive. Name six dangerous chemical found in tobacco smoke. Identify 4 carcinogens found in tobacco. State why herbal cigarettes are not a safe alternative for teens. Examine the benefits of Quitting Cigarette smoking.

3 Nicotine: the highly addictive drug that is found in all tobacco products.
Chemicals found in tobacco smoke: Tar- sticky, black substance that coats the airway. Cyanide- poisonous gas used to develop photos. Formaldehyde- embalming fluid.

5 Carcinogens in Chewing tobacco
Arsenic Nickel Benzopyrene Polonium Chewing tobacco can lead to mouth sores and oral cancer, esophagus cancer, and stomach cancer.

6 Herbal Cigarettes Many teens think these cigarettes are safe, because they do not contain tobacco. However, Herbal cigarettes do contain tobacco and spices for flavor. Because they taste better they are more attractive to teens. Cloves and Bidis are examples of Herbal cigarettes.

7 Pipes and Cigars Many people feel this type of smoking is safer, because most do not inhale as deeply. This type of tobacco is linked to mouth and throat cancer. Simply put: There is no safe form of tobacco.

8 Cigarettes smoking kills over 500,000 (in 2010) people in the US each year.
Nicotine addiction leads people to smoke for a long time even if health problems occur. Quitting smoking is difficult and withdrawal is unpleasant. Remember the effects of tobacco use is far worse than withdrawl.

9 Within 20 Minutes of Quitting Smoking
Your body begins a series of changes that continue for years… 20 minutes after quitting: Your heart rate drops. 12 hours: carbon monoxide levels in your body drop to normal. 2 weeks to 3 months: Your heart attack Risks drop/Your lung function begins improving.

10 1 to 9 months: Your coughing and shortness of breath decrease.
1 Year: Your risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker. 5 Years: Stroke risk is reduced to that of a non-smoker. 10 Years: Lung cancer death rate is about half that of a smoker. Cancer risks of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decrease.

11 15 Years: Risk of Coronary heart disease is that of a non-smoker.
