Headings Offset from direct heading It’s all in the hands
Used when you can not find a suitable landmark that lines up with your heading It’s all in the hands Helps provide a mean to approximate angular difference

Ranges Most useful and accurate line of position
Valuable for compass checks and determining deviation

Ranges Relative positions of landmarks
Used when you can not find two landmarks that form a range

Bearings Direct bearings Relative bearings
Measured from true or magnetic north Two or more bearings that cross produce a fix Relative bearings Taken in reference to the bow of the boat

Collision Bearings Use relative bearings to anticipate the potential for a collision If the relative bearing of another boat does not change, you will collide. Know the rules of the road and take appropriate action.
