3 Bangladesh SRI: Key features and strengths
Key country in global ship recycling Ship Recycling activities started in 1970s Total number of yards about 150 Annual dismantling capacity million LDT Market share - 20% in number of ships, and 30% in LDT recycled Capacity to dismantle relatively large and diverse range of ships.

4 Bangladesh SRI: Key features and strengths
per year since 1980 Produces 2.5 million tons of scrap steel /year Fulfills 60-70% of country’s raw iron demand Generates output worth about 770 million USD a year Creates 25,000-40,000 full-time equivalent jobs The numerous strengths would help SRI achieving sustainable development.

GOB declared Ship Recycling activities as ‘INDUSTRY’ in 2011 Bangladesh Ship Breaking and Ship Recycling Rules was enacted in 2011 ‘Bangladesh Ship Recycling Zone’ was declared in 2011 Enactment of Bangladesh Ship Recycling Act 2018

6 Chronological development of Bangladesh SRI
Bangladesh Ship Recycling Act 2018 Establishment of a TSDF within next 3 years. Workers’ skill development ;and establishment of a Govt. training institute within next 5 years. Establishment & maintain an updated data-base of the trained workers; Insurance for all workers. Establishment of an Inter-ministerial One-Stop-Service to ensure effective disposal of administrative activities related to SRI. Achieving required capacities to meet the provisions of HKC within next 5 (five) years.

7 Recent development: SENSREC Phase I
Ministry of Industries, jointly with IMO implemented ‘SENSREC Phase I’ during Norad and EU provided financial assistance and BRS Secretariat brought technical assistance for this landmark project. Government of Bangladesh

8 SENSREC Phase I: Key Outcomes
Assessment of the Economic impacts of SRI Assessment of the Environmental impacts of SRI Development of inventory of hazardous wastes Development of primary plan for TSDF Development of training module for Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance Awareness and commitment about HKC among the owners of SRFs and Govt. officials

9 SENSREC Project Phase II: Basic information
SENSREC Phase II commenced in June 2018 Project grant 1.10 million US$ by Norwegian Government Implementation by IMO and Ministry of Industries Objectives of Phase II to enhance national capacities for safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships To support GoB to comply with the requirements of the HKC and be in a position to accede to the convention in due course

10 SENSREC Phase II : Expected Key Outcomes
WP1: Legal and institutional refinement Expected outcome 1: Recommendations and roadmap for accession to and effective implementation of the HKC and related waste management. WP2: Training and its management Expected outcome 2: Implementing training strategy and materials developed by phase I.

TOT Courses for establishing trainers pool TOT to 30 trainers-Phase I TOT to 200 trainers- Phase II Training of workers Training to about 700 workers Workers’ Registration & Training Records Workers’ Registration Training records Electronic ID Card -linked with centralized database

Administrative reform Formation of Bangladesh Ship Recycling Board Gap and need analysis and roadmap for legal & institutional reform A dedicated Wing under MOI Development of SRFs Guidelines and roadmap for SRFs to comply with HKC ClassNK works under IMO’s ITCP 20 yards have developed SRFP –technical support from GSR
