HOW A COMPASS WORKS Magnetic Needle – Permanently magnetized needle is placed on a pivot and rotates freely in the horizontal plane. Earth’s Magnetic Field – Exerts forces on the compass needle, causing it to rotate until it comes to rest the the same direction as the magnetic field. Magnetic Pole – The north magnetic pole is located about 1000Km from the geographical north pole. Horizontal Force – Responsible for the direction in which the compass needle is oriented. Shift – The magnetic field allows the magnetic north pole to shift geographic position about 5-10cm per year. Red Star OHP-1
