Legal authority or right The possession or control over others

POWER AND CONFLICT Power in Physics: Power is the rate at which work is performed or energy converted Power in Mathematics: Exponent – a mathematical notation indicating the number of times a quantity is multiplied by itself. 63 = 6 x 6 x 6 =??

Sources of Power for energy: Fuel – coal, natural gas, hydrogen fuel cells, oil, wood fires. Geo-Thermal – Subterranean steam and magma. Solar Power – can be used with solar voltaic power cells to generate electricity.

Wind – Modern windmills can transfer energy of the air flowing through them into other forms of energy such as electricity. Nuclear Power – Certain elements are able to undergo powerful nuclear reactions releasing energy which can be transformed into electricity. Hydropower – using the motion of water as it flows downstream.

Conflict - Mental struggle resulting in incompatible impulses Conflict – A prolonged hostile encounter

What is impact? Do expressions of power have to be quick or violent? What avenues to you have to exert your power within the community?

What are the visible signs of powerful unity within a community? Does a group have more power than an individual? Can being part of a group take away your personal power?

Who has the power to control you or your behaviour? Where does that power come from? Is control something to be feared or admired? Does self-control inhibit you or put you in a position of power?

Parents, School, Governments. Why do people have differing responses to authorities like teachers and police? Whose authority would you never question?

What does access mean? Is power the same thing as freedom? Do all people have equal access to basic human rights, representation in government, in the media? In what situations do you feel powerless?

Is status achieved through material possessions or personal qualities? Is status a recognition of power, or a power in itself? Does Power depend on envy or respect?

Can knowledge give you power? Is information powerful in itself or does it depend on the way it is used? What knowledge is powerful in your community? Do educated people have power over uneducated people and what exactly do you mean by the word ‘educated’?
