Revelation Part 2 Lesson 10
2
Review The Lamb breaks/opens the seals in Chp. 8
The 7th seal begins the sounding of the 7 trumpets (8:1) At the 7th trumpet, John saw 3 signs in heaven and proclamations are made about God beginning to reign (11:15; 12 & 15) 7 bowls of God’s wrath follow the sounding of the 7th trumpet (16) Rev. 16:19 Babylon is given her wrath at 7th bowl Angel announces Babylon’s fall BEFORE the bowls are poured out (14:8) Chapter 14 details what will happen during the time of the bowls

Revelation 17 Theme: Judgment of the great harlot/Babylon
John is shown details of Babylon’s judgment in chapter 17-18 Fall occurs at the last bowl 16:19 Kings of the earth committed immorality with her “Those who dwell on the earth” are drunk with the wine of her immorality (vs. 2) Mother of harlots and abominations of the earth Sits on many waters=peoples, nations, etc. The woman IS the great city who reigns over the kings of the earth Sits on beast with 7 heads;10 horns (Rev. 13)
4
Revelation 17 7 heads= 7 mountains = 7 kings (vs. 9-10)
The beast IS one of the 7 kings, but also an 8th He was. Is not. Is about to go to destruction 10 horns = 10 kings (vs. 12) They receive a kingdom/authority with the beast for 1 hour (vs. 12) One purpose: give their power and authority to the beast (vs. 13) They make the harlot desolate and burn her (vs.16) They war with the Lamb, but are overcome (vs. 14)
5
Babylon Recap She sits on the beast
The beast controls the entire earth for 3 ½ years She rules over the kings of the earth She sits on the people of the whole earth She is drunk with the blood of the saints and Jesus’ witnesses She is anti-God “Seems” like this takes place 3 ½ years BEFORE Babylon’s fall at the last bowl Then the beast & 10 kings destroy Babylon They are NOT successful against the Lamb But this is ALL in God’s control/plan (vs. 17)
6
Revelation 18 Theme: Detailed description of Babylon’s Fall
Babylon is remembered (14:8;16:19) Judgment is in one day (vs.8) and one hour (vs.17) “The woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a gold cup FULL of abominations and of the unclean things of her immorality.” (17:4) Compare with: “To the degree that she glorified herself and lived sensuously, to the same degree give her torment and mourning: for she says in her heart, ‘I sit as a queen and I am not a widow, and will never see mourning’.” (18:7)
7
Babylon Great wealth, art, music, marriage, etc. (10-14)
Her immorality with the nations and kings of the earth is the SAME as in Rev. 17 There is demonic activity in the city (vs.2) Beast that is empowered by the devil in 13:1-2, 5 “Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his norns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names. And the beast which I saw was like a leopard…..and the dragon gave him his power, throne and authority for 42 months. (vs.5) Judgement: burned with fire (17:16; 18:18)
8
Differences in 17 & 18 Rev. 18 Focuses on economic aspect of the city
Rev. 18 Babylon is clearly an economic trade center for the world She has a close connection with the beast, the kings of the earth, the merchants and all the people. Chapter 17 describes her appearance and that of the beast. Chapter 17 interprets the 10 horns and the seven heads and the waters where the harlot sits.
9
Babylon’s Fall Corruption, immorality Greedy accumulation of wealth
The merchants are devastated 10 kings and the beast devastate HER She is violently burned The kings and the beast are NOT sorry that she is gone, but the merchants are. The beast’s system includes a mark for buying and selling which applies to the city It is a place of great trade and commerce She is filled with demonic influence
10
God’s Judgments He uses the wicked to bring about His just judgments (17:17) He is in COMPLETE control: He put the destruction of Babylon into the hearts and minds of the beast and the ten kings (17:16) They seem to be in control, but only until God’s Word is fulfilled. (17:17) They are completely deceived when they go to war against the Lamb. (19:19-20) Satan and his demons KNOW they will lose this war. (17:14) NEVER forget: God is in control.
