Accelerated Biology Mr. Warmkessel

3000 children die from it every day in Africa.
This year it will strike up to 500,000,000 people and 1,000,000 of them will die. (most of these will be under age 5) Alexander the Great likely died from it, leading to the end of the Greek Empire. It may have stopped the armies of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan. At least four popes have died from it.

George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Ulysses S
George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Ulysses S. Grant all suffered from it. It was so bad in Washington DC in the late 1800s that a prominent physician lobbied to build a huge wire screen around the city. In the Pacific theater in World War II casualties from it exceeded those from combat. Bill Gates has called it “the worst thing on the planet”. Some scientists believe that one out of every two people who have ever lived have died of this…
4
And in wealthy western countries it is rarely given
any thought… Do YOU know what it is????
6
Only one genus of mosquito is capable of
transmitting malaria…Anopheles.
7
Important malaria vectors
8
What factor do you think is most important for the transmission of malaria?
9
What is malaria? A protist of the genus Plasmodium that enters a human’s liver cells and red blood cells. Only four types of Plasmodium cause malaria in humans, of which Plasmodium falciparum is by far the most deadly.

CDC Malaria
12
Which of these do you think we should try to learn more about to fight malaria?
-Our liver cells and RBCs -The life cycle of Plasmodium parasites -The differences in the DNA of different species of Plasmodium -The life cycle of Anopheles mosquitoes -The genetic differences between Anopheles that can and cannot carry malaria -How mosquitoes adapt to insecticides -How changes in climate will affect the spread of malaria and other vector-borne diseases.
13
Can you name any other diseases carried by or caused by living things?
14
This year the world’s population will top 7 billion!
15
How will we feed everyone?
How will everyone get clean water? How will we fight not only malaria, but so many more diseases that cause illness and death every day? Should we try to fight them, or are they nature’s way of “weeding out the weak genes”?
16
The starting point for improving life is understanding it the best we can.
17
Can you think of any reasons why this could be the most important course you ever took?
