2 Homework: What are some groups that were members of the French counterrevolutionary movement? Why were they so unwilling to support some or all of the revolutionary ideas?

3 Do-Now: Why were peasants, who made up about 80% of France’s population, so powerless? Cite your knowledge of the other two estates in the answer.

4 NOTES ON 19.1 The First Estate/Clergy
Clergy is wealthy, pays no tax, criticized for beng idle. Established schools and soc services. Polit. Power. Criticized- Philophes. Condemnd enlt. The Second Estate/Nobility Lost military power, but gained good govt jobs. Didn’t pay taxes. Govt in debt. Necker- Pay taxes. 2nd estate= no. Didn’t make a lot of money. Hated Royal bureacracy Didn’t revolt b/c they had status and did not want to be taxed. Feared losing priv. The Third Estate: Bourgeoisie to Peasantry 98 % of pop. Small price increases of bread threatened hunger for the peasants. Heavily taxed. Tithed. Limted on hunted. Increases in crime as a result of poverty.

5 Why Revolution? SOCIAL Discontent stems from inequalities and unfair treatment of 3rd estate 1st and 2nd estate untaxed. Limitations on hunting. Access to high paying jobs. Food was expensive for 3rd estate. 3rd couldn’t vote. (taxation? Representation?)
