1 Integumentary & Respiratory Systems
Packet #87 Chapters 42 & 49

2 Skin/Integument Skin, considered an organ, is the major component of the integumentary system. The integumentary system is also composed of other accessory organs Glands Nails Hair

3 Functions of the Ingumentary System
Protection Metabolism Vitamin D Excretion (also a component of the excretory system) Salts Small amount of wastes Ammonia Urea Excreted in sweat Thermoregulation Temperature regulation Storage Blood

4 Accessory Organs Glands

5 The Glands There are four types of glands: - Eccrine Glands
Releases watery solution Cools skin as water eveporates Ceruminous Glands Secrete cerumen (wax) Mammary Glands Produce milk secreted through the nipples of breasts Apocrine Glands Located under skin of armpits and pubic regions Releases solution in response to stress or sexual excitement beginning at puberty

10 Respiratory System Thursday, September 26, 2019Thursday, September 26, 2019

11 Respiratory System I Deliver air to the lungs Breathing
Oxygen in the air diffuses out of the lungs and into the blood Carbon Dioxide diffuses out of the blood and into the lungs Breathing Inspiration (Inhaling of air) Expiration (Exhaling of air) External Respiration Gas exchange between lungs and blood Gas Transport Carried out by the cardiovascular system Internal Respiration Gas exchange between the blood and “body cells.” Thursday, September 26, 2019Thursday, September 26, 2019

12 Parts of the Respiratory System
Thursday, September 26, 2019Thursday, September 26, 2019

13 Parts of the Respiratory System
Nose Nostrils Hair Mucus Pharynx Throat Tonsils located in this region Larynx Contains the epiglottis Flap responsible for preventing food from entering lungs Adam’s Apple Protects the larynx Thursday, September 26, 2019Thursday, September 26, 2019

14 Parts of the Respiratory System II
Trachea The windpipe Contains globlet cells that produce mucus Bronchi Two tubes that branch from trachea to left and right lungs Bronchioles Alveoli (Sacs) Where the gas exchange occurs in the lungs. Thursday, September 26, 2019Thursday, September 26, 2019

15 Parts of the Respiratory System III
Lungs Pair of cone-shaped bodies that occupy the thorax Contain the alveoli Thursday, September 26, 2019Thursday, September 26, 2019

16 Gas Exchange The differences in pressure, outside the lungs in comparison to inside the lungs, assist with the diffusion process Thursday, September 26, 2019Thursday, September 26, 2019

17 Lung Volumes and Capacities
Tidal Volume About 500 ml Amount of air inspired during normal breathing Inspiratory Reserve Volume About 3100 ml Additional amount of air that can be forced inhaled after normal inspiration Thursday, September 26, 2019Thursday, September 26, 2019

18 Lung Volumes and Capacities
Expiratory Reserve Volume About 1200 ml Additional amount of air that can be force exhaled after expiration of normal volume Residual Volume Volume of air still remaining in the lungs after expiratory reserve volume is exhaled Thursday, September 26, 2019Thursday, September 26, 2019
