ISRA was founded in 2007;
Founding fathers from various countries:
China, Turkey, Netherlands and the US;
All ISRA members actively involved in preparation Hong Kong Convention;
Main objective: Promoting sound and safe recycling of ships;

8. Hong Kong Convention (HKC)
Ratification HKC is very important;
HKC is first step towards worldwide regulation for sound and safe ship recycling;
Ship recycling yards: Designed, Constructed and Operated;
Weakness of HKC: National governments decide over compliance yards
No independent verifier
Ratification of all countries concerned is necessary to make further progress ;
HKC is a stepping stone for EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EU list);
ISRA: For the future HKC can look at the EU-Regulation;

9. EU Ship Recycling Regulation
Facilitates ratification of Hong Kong Convention
Stricter than Hong Kong Convention
ISRA welcomes this clarity, equals ISRA standards
EU- list is an excellent tool for restoring level playing field.
Technical requirements good for implementing EU regulation;
Not only EU member states but also possible for other countries.

China
Very important country for ship building;
Substantial part in world market , ca. 42%;
China has excellent ship recycling facilities;
Import ban on waste including end of life ships;
Important that China opens its border for end of life ships world wide.
Important that China ratifies HKC.
ISRA still in contact with yards concerned;
File yet not closed;
