Use of TEL assets in online Science modules: Evaluating student usage and efficacy Jane Loughlin Katherine Leys Elaine Moore Hazel Carr

2 Objectives Audit TEL assets used in a selection of online Science modules currently in presentation, categorising these in terms of: Type Purpose Accessibility and level of ‘hidden’ content. Relative contribution to the scheduled study Distribution in the study schedule. Assess the efficacy of teaching delivered via different types of TEL asset: Student use – do they use it; and if so how, and for how long? Perceived value – do students enjoy and / or value the activity or asset; to what extent do students believe the activity or asset contributed to their understanding of the concept or topic?

3 Methods Assessing efficacy Audit
‘Page-by-page’ review of the selected modules Need to establish the criteria for categorising type and purpose of TEL assets Consider conducting a pilot on one or two modules to establish criteria Assessing efficacy Usage analytics Student and AL surveys Student diaries

4 Outcomes /Applications
Increased awareness of how TEL is used in online Science modules thus far and how successful or otherwise it is. ↓ Inform design of future online modules e.g. assist module teams during production (feeding into early planning workshops).
