What Are Resources? A supply of money, materials, staff, and other assets that are used by people or organizations in order to function. RESOURCES
3
1. Natural Resources Examples:
land and those things attached to or contained in the land These resources are usually used in the production of goods and service Examples: oil, water, coal, copper and wood
4
Resources 2. Human Resources The people who work in a business
These people produce the products and services that a business sells Their knowledge and skills are also considered resources EX: managers, workers, and laborers
5
Resources 3. Capital Resources
Money invested in the business or paid for expenses EX: Money invested in equipment, tools, and supplies
6
How do businesses decide on how these resources are used?
Location of the business Where does the business operate? Economic conditions Is money available? Availability of resource Can the resource be obtained? Why does this matter?
7
Renewable Resources Renewable resources can be replaced
EX: machinery and workers Water can be considered a renewable material when carefully controlled usage, treatment, and release are followed. If not, it would become a non-renewable resource at that location. For example, groundwater is usually removed from an aquifer at a rate much greater than its very slow natural recharge, and so groundwater is considered non-renewable. Removal of water from the pore spaces may cause permanent compaction (subsidence) that cannot be renewed.
8
Non-Renewable Resources
Some resources are nonrenewable, meaning that once they run out they cannot be replaced. EX: coal and copper
