1 Web Service Requirements for WISE Data Exchange
Duncan Taylor – SEPA David Edwards - EHS

2 EHS - Article 8 Process Information originating from a number of sources. Some data from outside EHS. Data in a variety of forms: spreadsheet database GIS files paper

3 EHS - Article 8 Process Translate reporting sheets into a spreadsheet of geographical and non-geographical data. Plot the schemas to determine how the data is organised. Detailed examination of schema to check the precise format of the data. Check the tables in the Access database to determine how best to fill in the tables. Produce spreadsheets for the monitoring stations and monitoring sub-programmes. Import the information from the monitoring stations spreadsheets into the Access database.

4 EHS - Article 8 Process Cut and paste the information from the method statements into the Access database. Create the link table between the sites and programmes. 3rd party check of data in the Access database. UK-wide data consistency check. Generation and validation of the .xml files. Upload using Reportnet.

5 SEPA – Article 8 Process All information (spatial and non-spatial) held centrally in Oracle database Used Oracle XMLDB to create and store XML returns Store XML within database Register schemas with returns Security and version control provided by database Can view as relational data (through SQL) or as folders & files (through web browser / WebDAV)

6 Article 8 Process (I) Download schema
Match items in schema to fields in database Register schema document in database Create database procedure to generate XML files – automatically validated against schema Sign-off XML by viewing through stylesheet Load XML into WISE

7 Article 8 Process (II) Oracle XSD Parameters attributes RBD RBD_ID
Name C_CD Waterbodies WB_ID Lon Lat Description Dist_CD Name Reporting Level Surface Water Monitoring Stations EU CD o o Parameters C_CD = “UK” Reporting Level = 1 Lon Stations o o Lat Name

8 Article 8 Process (III) View & Check WISE Relational Data XMLDB XSL
Report XML WISE Database Procedure Parameters XSD

9 Benefits of Direct XML Generation
Production of return is automated – can be rerun at any time Immediate validation against schema XML can be viewed in many ways: display through stylesheets, as data, as export file But still requires manual export of file

10 Web Services Create XML repository Expose data through web services
Same data can be used for many purposes Upload to WISE Display on agency websites Use in internal applications Data can come from multiple sources

11 Web Services (II) WISE Exposed XML Repository Services Website XML XSD
BROWSER XSL Apps Server

12 Requirement: Schema definitions
