ISD Reusable Object Working Group Status Meta Data Requirements
Goodmorning, before we get started this morning, I would like to take a few moments and go around the room to get acquainted. I know most of you probably know each other but there are a few folks here who have not had a chance to meet. After the introductions, Trey will address the group and then we will go over the agenda for the rest of the day. Technical data as defined in 22 CFR is not contained herein. Classification Defining learning objectives using Reusable Definition of Competency or Educational Objective (RDCEO) The RDCEO allows encoding of different schemas to represent statements about an objective, competency, skill etc Supports various communities Two mandatory elements Identifier and Title Proposal for Objective Metadata representation in LOM – Claude Ostyn, 12 January 2004 by Click2learn, Inc AICC Meeting – Phoenix, AR February 3, 2004

No RDCEO If there is no existing RCDEO, just create a Taxon as if there was a RDCEO, but in that case the value TaxonPath should not be "RDCEO" to avoid confusion. For example, Classification Purpose = "educational objective" TaxonPath Source = "MYINDUSTRY Basic Skills" Taxon Id = "Nutcracking101" Entry = Given a nut and a cracker, crack the nut without cracking the bolt" Proposal for Objective Metadata representation in LOM – Claude Ostyn, 12 January 2004 by Click2learn, Inc AICC Meeting – Phoenix, AR February 3, 2004

Hierarchy of objectives
The LOM classification model is designed to describe an objective in the context of a hierarchy. Each objective in the hierarchy path can be represented by a taxon in the taxon path, as in this example: Classification Purpose = "educational objective" TaxonPath Source = "RDCEO" Taxon Id = (ID of RDCEO) Entry = (Title of RDCEO, i.e. one or more LangString values) Id = (ID of a more specific RDCEO) Id = (ID of an even more specific RDCEO) Proposal for Objective Metadata representation in LOM – Claude Ostyn, 12 January 2004 by Click2learn, Inc AICC Meeting – Phoenix, AR February 3, 2004

Proposal for Objective Metadata representation in LOM – Claude Ostyn, 12 January 2004 by Click2learn, Inc Discussion Advantage to Educational Category Less Complex Disadvantages: Requires Definition of new data elements and/or vocabularies Since "Education Objective" is already defined in LOM as a purpose for classification, not using this would violate one of the conformance rules of LOM, which states that "In order to maximize semantic interoperability, extended data elements should not replace data elements in the LOM structure. This means that an organization should not introduce new data elements of its own that replace LOM data elements." AICC Meeting – Phoenix, AR February 3, 2004
