1 Phases of the Moon

2 Fly me to the moon Vocab: Crater: depression in a surface Maria:
Mostly believed to be caused by asteroid impact or ancient volcanic eruptions Maria: Large dark areas on the moon Satellite Celestial body or object that orbits a planet

3 Phases of the Moon Eight phases
Rotation= 29.5 days to complete the phases

4 1. New Moon Side of moon facing earth is not illuminated
Up through the day Down through the night

5 2. Waxing Crescent Moon begins to show.. But not for long
See a little bit more of the lunar sliver each night Stays up a little later each night

6 3. First Quarter ½ of the moon is visible for first ½ of the evening

7 4. Waxing Gibbous Moon is most visible See all but a little sliver
Remains in sky most of night

8 5. Full Moon Entire face is showing (man in the moon)
Stay up the entire night

9 6. Waning Gibbous Like Waxing Gibbous
See all but a sliver Difference is that we see less and less each night=waning

10 7. Last Quarter See ½ of the Moon’s lit surface

11 8. Waning Crescent Only see a small sliver Just before the morning
Each night less and less is visible for less time

12 Lunar Eclipse Moon receives its light from the sun but when it goes into Earth shadow…. no light can reach the moon However, the air around earth “bends” the sunlight causing some light to get to the moon making it look dull red. Can last for 3 to 4 hours Aligned as Sun  Earth  Moon

13 Solar Eclipse Moon moves in between sun and earth
Blocks out the sun ‘s light causing daylight to look like night time. Very short period of time (few minutes) Aligned as Sun  Moon  Earth
