HEMATOLOGICAL PROFILES OF DORPER SHEEP IN THE VET FARM OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI.
MARTIN WAINAINA KIMARI (2012) SUPERVISOR: DR. T.O.ABUOM ABSTRACT Assessment of health status of animals is heavily dependent on the availability of reference data for haematological parameters, against which pathology can be detected (ref). These reference values are then used in the interpretation of laboratory haematology results. A recent study has even revealed that haematological data can be used to forecast neonatal lamb mortality in Thalli ewes (ref). In this study, twenty eight female and one male sheep of the Dorper breed were subjected to blood analysis in order to determine their haematological profiles. The results of this study were: PCV (29.17 ± 4.6%), Total Neutrophils (65.64 ± 9.6%), Mature Neutrophils ( ± 9.6%), Immature Neutrophils (0.17 ± 0.7%), Lymphocytes (32.82 ± 9.8%), Eosinophils (1.39 ± 1.3%) and 0% for Monocytes and Basophils. The results of this study contribute to the knowledge of the reference ranges for Dorper sheep and can be used for health monitoring and disease diagnosis.
