2 What is Research? Research simply means trying to find answers to questions to learn more about the world around us Research is the organized, systematic search for answers to the questions we ask Research is a disciplined inquiry

3 What is Research? According to the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary(2007), the word research means: a. to search or investigate exhaustively b. studious inquiry or examination; c. the collecting of information about a particular subject

4 AIM OF RESEARCH THE RESEARCHER RESEARCH
To perform and conduct a close and careful study to find out (new) facts or information To study (something) thoroughly so as to present information in a detailed and accurate manner THE RESEARCHER Contributes to the understanding of the phenomenon Communicates understanding to others RESEARCH Systematic process of collecting and analyzing information to increase our understanding of the phenomenon we are studying

Self –discipline, commitment and determination in order to get the result in short span of time Develop life-skills that will be of assistance throughout your career such as time-management, IT skills, and understanding statistics to name a few Carrying out research work can help to contribute and make a difference however small it can be

6 Basic steps in the research process
1. Select a general topic that interest you in some way 2. List key words to help you look up information about the topic 3. Go to and encyclopedia or other references source to get an overview of the topic 4. Make source cards for whatever sources you will use for information 5. Using the general overview, begin to focus the topic into something you can cover well

6. Write a statement of purpose about the focused topic 7. Brainstorm questions about the focused topic 8. Write your research 9. Write your works cited

8 Finding answers to research questions
There are 2 basic ways of finding answers to questions By looking at what other people have said about a particular issue. This is called secondary, conceptual or library research and it is an essential form of inquiry because it would be a waste of time and energy to ignore other people’s work and reinvent the wheel By conducting one’s own data-based or empirical investigation, which involves collecting data and then drawing some conclusion from it. This is called primary research.
