Statement of Intent I want to create a series of pots inspired by trees, man made objects using wood, specifically wooden stair spindles, chair and table legs and any other turned wooden objects. I want to make work inspired by these because of their profiles, I have always tried to work in a formalist way, I try to achieve a symmetrical profile in the pots that I coil build. I will be using tree inspired colours for glazes on my work. I was going to make pots in sections that could be stacked, and switched around to make up different profiles. I was going to show changes in seasons by using tree inspired colours, the different colours leaves turn throughout the year, I think it would have been interesting to see how mixing these would look when changing around how the pots were stacked. I am not doing this anymore because I feel like making the pots fit together is really difficult when hand building, much more time consuming. They didn’t look quite right – small gaps or not fitting perfectly which is a problem because of the way I work, trying to make everything look neat. I will be making my pots in one piece now, but instead of making them smooth like they are when they are turned I want to bring the texture of trees onto it or start having very small branches ‘sprouting’ out from these pots, as a reminder of where these objects came from.

At the start of the year I made these pieces to get back into making again, there was no plan or sketches when I made these, I feel like I have more freedom at the start with no plan in mind and it lets me get ideas from the forms I make.

Linda Nowell I find Linda Nowells work appealing in its textures looking so much like the textures in actual trees, this is something I would like to try to achieve in my own work.

I found this artist through a tutorial where it was recommended that I look at her work, I instantly was drawn to the forms that she makes and I find that the profiles of her pots are similar to the kind that I try to make. This work also appeals to me because of the simple light colour of the work, which doesn’t draw away attention from the pots profiles.

I will not be making pots in different parts that can all be changed as it doesn't suit the way I work, the top and bottom of every pot would need to be the same size & height so that they could all slot together in different ways. I feel like this limits what I can do with the shapes that I am creating, and I don’t enjoy working this way, so I have decided to go back to making my pots in one piece.

When I was switching around the pots that could be stacked it gave me ideas for pot shapes that I could make in one piece so I don’t feel like I have been wasting time by doing them as they have helped me in this way as a source of inspiration
