“Curriculum Development” under Teaching Resources, myFSU portal, faculty and staff home for Faculty Senate resources for syllabus: Written expected student learning outcomes Evaluation (grading statement) with approximate weight of grade components – stick with these Prescribed ADA Statement with SDRC Academic Honor Policy, including specifics re: group work and multiple submission Classroom expectations re: behavior, attendance Tutoring options

6 Grade Appeals Based on fit between what you say in the syllabus about your grading standards and how you actually grade Attempts to resolve at level closest to where the perceived problem arose. Faculty judgment of student progress inherent in grading process Burden on student and based on evidence of “arbitrary, capricious, or discriminatory” grading Students have the right to exercise process, yet not to a specific outcome

7 Test and Exam Planning Final exams scheduled centrally
No finals given outside exam week No tests during the last week of class, unless there is also a final exam during exam week Testing Center fills up early in semester and scheduling priority will be given to distance learning courses. Required to remain compliant with Federal Financial Aid rules (keeps students from receiving aid when they are not attending) All students must attend first class meeting or be dropped, regardless of discipline, course level, size, delivery method, etc. Faculty required to take attendance at first class meeting Methods vary, but online First-Day Attendance tool recommended Students expect to be dropped!

15 Grey Areas and Instructor Responsibility to Clarify
Note: Instructors are responsible for reinforcing the importance of the Academic Honor Policy in their courses and for clarifying their expectations regarding collaboration and multiple submission of academic work. (In writing and verbally)

16 Unauthorized Group Work
Unauthorized collaborating with others. Typical Examples Include: Working with another person or persons on any activity that is intended to be individual work, where such collaboration has not been specifically authorized by the instructor. 2015 survey results identify this as the behavior that students are most likely to enact and as one that isn’t typically viewed as cheating by students.

17 Multiple Submission Submitting the same academic work (including oral presentations) for credit more than once without instructor permission. It is each instructor’s responsibility to make expectations regarding incorporation of existing academic work into new assignments clear to the student in writing by the time assignments are given. Typical Examples Include: Submitting the same paper for credit in two courses without instructor permission; making minor revisions in a credited paper or report (including oral presentations) and submitting it again as if it were new work.

18 Technology-Related Issues
Recently, instructors have discovered instances of students creating course-based Facebook groups and using them to collaborate on homework and/or quizzes Students have also used GroupMe as a confidential communication route for arranging unauthorized collaboration New “tools” use synonyms to help students plagiarize If you assign individual work outside of class, please articulate your policy regarding collaboration clearly and be explicit about how it applies to study groups on Facebook, GroupMe, and elsewhere online. 19 Online Testing Issues 2015 Survey Results – frequency of reported cheating behaviors (from an average of 5% across all f-t-f exams to 22% collaborating with others, 25% getting unauthorized help, and 62-65% consulting unauthorized materials).
