Our tasks Long-term planning of the traffic system for road and rail transport, shipping and aviation Construction, operation and maintenance of State roads and railways Procuring inter-regional public transportation Financial support to the maritime shipping industry The tasks of the Transport Administration include in practice that we shall make sure that the transport system works, which is a basic precondition for guaranteeing that society will function. The Administration creates the prerequisites for ensuring that all transportation and travel is conducted in the best and safest way, regardless of where you live - in addition with due consideration to the environment and health. This is summarised in our vision. Everyone shall arrive in a smooth, green and secure manner (see next figure)

Everybody arrives smoothly, the green and safe way
Our vision Everybody arrives smoothly, the green and safe way The vision expresses the Transport Administration’s direction of intent. It is a guiding-star that shall provide the inspiration for a common approach to all different tasks that are incorporated within the Administration. This what we mean by a smooth, green and secure way: Smooth Our transport system is efficient and available for all Both citizens and the business community, regardless of individual preconditions and where they live or work, have access to good communications. We have a comprehensive attitude to travel and transportation. It is both smooth and convenient to be able to choose and combine different modes of transport from door to door. Green Our transport system takes environment and health into consideration When we are developing the transport system we always consider health aspects and give due consideration to people and the countryside/nature. The transport system shall be clean, quiet, energy-efficient and have a limited impact on the climate. Secure Our traffic environments feel secure and safe for everyone The whole journey, irrespective of how we travel or are transported in traffic, is safe and our traffic environments are experienced as being secure. Together with other players in society, we are working for unambiguous safety goals with a zero vision as our guiding star.

Brief data on the Swedish Transport Administration
North Director-General Lena Erixon The Board 9 000 employees, 150 occupations Central Business volume in West Stockholm East Of which Investments SEK 23.5 billion O&M and traffic control SEK 19.5 billion Miscellaneous SEK 11.0 billion South Director-General: Lena Erixon. 8000 employees. (this figure covers staff who are permanently employed. We employ more on part-time jobs (The figures are from the annual report, December 2017)). A total of 150 different occupations are represented in the Transport Administration. Many employees work in the following areas: traffic control work on the roads and railways, community planning and negotiation and survey work, IT-work, technical survey and development, survey, inspection and supervision work, shipping work, architectural and infrastructure design works, production planning and production management. The Head Office is in Borlänge. Six regions with regional centres: Kristianstad (South), Gothenburg (West), Eskilstuna (East), Stockholm (Stockholm), Gävle (Central) and Luleå (North). SEK 55,4 billion in business volume, of which some SEK 23,9 billion for investments and about SEK 19,4 billion for operation, maintenance and traffic control. The remaining SEK 12 billion includes costs for the planning process, State joint-financing (e.g. for public transport), State subsidies for private roads, contracted traffic and support for research and innovation in the transport area.

The Rail Network: The State Rail Network that is administered by the Swedish Transport Administration comprises km of operational track (track-kilometres), of which km are double tracks and multi-tracks, and km of tracks have been electrified. The rail network also includes railway bridges and 147 tunnels.

On a normal day 4 500 000 people travel by car
people travel by bus 900 000 people cycle passenger transports on road ferries 2000 knowledge tests and 1500 driving tests Practically all types of freight are transported on the roads. Road transport is used on mainly short stretches (up to 100 km). Bulk goods are a very strong product – not least in the form of gravel and stone for construction works. Petroleum products are also transported to a large extent by road. Other typical goods carried in lorries include consumer products (food, clothes and solid waste).

Trains at the right time Current traffic information
Accessible roads Trains at the right time Current traffic information Safer transport systems for everyone More energy-efficient transport systems Infrastructure for people and Nature Trains that arrive at the right time, accessible roads and good traffic information are some of our biggest contributions to society. At the same time, the transport system shall be safe, use as little energy as possible and be adapted to both people and Nature. We want everyone to arrive in a smooth, green and secure way.

About 2 800 construction projects
In addition to the Transport Administration’s 14 largest projects, there are another in progress which are also making a significant contribution to the development of the transport system. These are road and rail projects whose budgets are less than SEK 4 billion , and may be both conversion and new investment works. Every year we conduct some 1600 procurements The Transport Administration wants to create the conditions necessary for the market to increase the degree of innovation and productivity. We refer to this as being a pure client role, and means that we to a greater extent order functionality rather than finished technical solutions. We give the sector a larger undertaking and responsibility for implementation. In this way we create the preconditions for greater productivity, a higher level of innovation and greater efficiency in the construction sector-. It will mean that we are able to achieve a better result, goal achievement and social benefit for tax revenue and generate greater benefit for our customers.

Our largest projects Norrbotniabanan
The ERTMS Project (national project) DAT, Digitisation of the train positioning service, (throughout Sweden) E4 The Stockholm Bypass The Mälaren Line Project The North Link Project The East Link Project The Södertörn Cross Link Project The Gothenburg-Borås Project The Marieholm Connection Project The West Link Project Our largest projects are Sweden’s largest investments in the infrastructure. They are projects that either have a very large budget (over SEK 4 billion) or are particularly complex. The City Tunnel in Malmö is an example of a major project that has been recently completed (2010). Track Road Motala-Mjölby was opened in Major projects that will be either partly or completely finished within the next few years are The North Link Project (the northern link of the Stockholm inner ring road, 2014), and European Highways E18 Hjulsta-Kista Project (Stockholm). Before building something new, we first of all make sure to take care of the infrastructure we already have and find solutions which mean that can use existing infrastructure in a smarter and more efficient way. When this is not enough, we build new infrastructure. The major projects solve major problems – above where capacity is concerned. There are often bottlenecks in particularly critical parts of our existing system that we try to eliminate. For example, the Stockholm City Line – when it is finished in 2017 – will double the capacity for trains from the south en route for Stockholm Central, which will make it possible for both more frequent services and punctual trains through Stockholm and thereby have a positive impact on traffic throughout the Stockholm region, and in fact throughout the whole country Another example is the tunnel through Hallandsås, which on start of operation in 2015 will increase the capacity from four to 24 trains an hour on that part of the West Coast Line.. Heavier and a larger number of trains will be able to operate on the route, at the same time as it opens the opportunities for more frequent and more punctual passenger traffic. The major projects will have major positive effects on our system, and contribute in a significant way to community development through improved goods and passenger transportation.

National Plan 2018–2029 – a government framework of SEK 622,5 billion
SEK 333,5 billion Measures for the development of roads, railways, locks and navigation channels SEK 164 billion Operation and maintenance of roads SEK 125 billion Operation and maintenance of railways The multi-transport mode government framework up until the year 2029 is SEK 622,5 billion. Operation and maintenance: SEK 289 billion (of which railways SEK 125 billion and roads SEK 164 billion) Measures for the development of roads and State railways, locks and navigation channels, interest and amortisation etc. and frameworks for county plans account for a total of SEK 333,5 billion.
