Year 10 Design and Technology 16th July 2018
Learning objective: Go through Mock exam paper – Make notes on errors and make a list on areas you need to practice and revise. Complete all research sections of your coursework and begin initial sketches and designs Criteria: Make clear notes on exam feedback Complete research and design specification Include isometric designs
2
Starter – Mock exam feedback
Go through test paper Make a note on key questions and sections. Which questions do you need to revise more / practice? How far off were you to the next level? Did you meet your target? How could you improve?
3
Homework Collect questions for Paul. He is coming in on Thursday
Complete design specification Complete worksheet – Quality control Google classroom Set new homework / SUMMER WORK Using your list you made in the lesson; Begin revising key topics you have identified in your mock exam. Ensure all of your research section is complete. Continue developing initial ideas through drawings and labels. Ensure 2-3 A3 pages are full of designs. Go over in black pen. Some can be black and white and others rendered in colour. Due first lesson in September.

Today’s challenges • Addressing the needs of people with disabilities.
• Supporting developing countries. • Encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Task analysis 500 Word introduction to the problem Product analysis – ACCESS FM Existing products (x3-4 with PMI Comment next to each one) Material list – Include smart materials and adhesives Customer profile Customer survey and questionnaire Design Specification Complete research analysis Begin 2-3 A3 pages of initial ideas.

Page 2 – Understanding the problem
Introduction – On this page I will now identify a problem to solve with a design based on the challenge I have chosen which is: The problem – Write 500 words explaining what the problem you have identified is. How did you find out about the problem and issue you will solve? What are the main problems to solve? (Materials, suitability, practicality, ergonomics etc). Location – Where will your product be used and why? Research – Which tasks will you do and why? Client interviews, questionnaires, product research, design movement and sizes etc. Summary – What have you learnt on this page? What is it exactly you intend to design and make?

Mr Ward example - Disability
Now I have chosen the task to address the needs of people with disabilities I will begin to explore the specific problem I will address and focus on. The main area of disability I will focus on is blindness. This is because I have a family friend who is blind and I am aware of some of the struggles he faces on a daily basis. I have been inspired by him and I would love to create a design that would enhance and improve his lifestyle. To begin my research, I will interview him about some of the things he finds difficult in life. Once I have a list of key issues I will begin to focus on one key issue or problem to solve. I will then research and evaluate any existing products that address this issue. Blindness and or sight loss is an issue that effects over 2 million people in the Uk. As the population is ageing we are likely to experience some form of sight loss in one form or another in our lives. This is therefore an important issue which I hope to solves and help in my project. To start with I will need to research the needs of people who experience sight loss and or blindness through 1:1 interviews, contacting support agencies and companies such as guide dogs fro the blind, research existing materials and carry out surveys and questionnaires to people who fit my target audience. Because of ease I will base my research on people who live in the UK. I will also begin to think about what and how I can make my product. I want my design to be sustainable and recycle friendly. I will need to research appropriate materials to use for my project.
7
Mr Ward example – healthy lifestyles
I have chosen to base my project on encouraging a healthy lifestyle. This is because it is something that effects all our lives. I have chosen this task because I am a keen sportsman and fan and have seen how a healthy lifestyle can enhance performance and inspire others. The main area of health I will focus on is general fitness. Obesity is a rising concern in the Uk and the lack of exercise has said to be one of the main concerns of this. I would like to create a design that can be assessable by everyone regardless of age, gender, size and health. However, to make my research easier I will focus my target audience towards young adults. In order to start this project I need to research existing products relating to exercise. I need to consider many factors such as spiritual, moral and cultural issues as well as the impact on the environment my product may have.
8
Mr Ward example – Developing countries
Now I have chosen to focus on supporting developing countries I now need to focus on a specific area and problem. One of the main causes of disease in developing counties is the lack of transportation. The lack of transportation for different people is said to be a cause of famine, lack of education and health for people who live in remote areas of the world. Vehicle ownership is far lower for people who live in developing countries even so it still causes traffic congestion and accidents and air pollution. I would like to create a vehicle or mode of transport that will reduce carbon emissions and improve air pollution. I would also like my design to be sustainable and eco friendly. The design ideally would be used for people who live on roads that are rough or uneven. It should be suitable for people of all ages. To begin my research I will need to focus on refining my target audience. I will need to be in contact with charities and organisations that help developing countries and nations. I would like to organise 1:1 interviews as well as online surveys and questionnaires. I will also research suitable materials and tools I will need to make my design.

Page 4 – ACCESS FM – Product analysis page
Make notes on the following slides to help you complete your ACCESS FM Page. Think about what product you could analyse that will help you with your problem and task.
10
Today – What Next? Expand Task Analysis Dia – include an intro, the context, task and at the bottom initial brief with target audience. Complete Product Analysis – ACCESSFM with PMI comments. Intro & Summary Finish Materials, Glues and Environment Sheet. Intros & Detailed Summaries Image Board, Customer Profile and Other Intro & Summaries for all sections Draft your Analysis of Research

By the end of the lesson you will / have / be able to:
Understand how a Product Analysis works, & reasons why designers use them. Use ACCESSFM and PMI to complete a Product Analysis of your chosen package. Consider the presentation of your work, and how to achieve the best results for this task.

Product Analysis Cost Function Aesthetics Customer/User Size Materials
The perfume cost £30 for 30ml. I - The box is well made but looks more fun than expensive. The product seems over priced, in this box Function P – Protects the perfume well, even if dropped. M – The base can fall out when picked up. I – Push lid reveals opening base design to show off product. Could use this idea. Aesthetics P – Bright and eye catching design. Good colours. M – Looks like a chocolate box rather than a perfume. I – The holes in the lid allow other colours to be seen. Also add PMI to the following sections: Environment Materials Safety Customer/User P – Will appeal to the teenage market in terms of colour, design and celebrity name. M – Narrow age group appeal. I – Use of celebrity names to sell products they know nothing about. Size The box measures 100mm x 100mm x 100mm. I - It is much larger than the product itself.
15
ACCESS FM with PMI plus, minus, interesting
Aesthetics – Discuss looks and appearance Cost – Is the product good value for money? Why? Customer – Target age group; Typical User? Environment – How environmentally friendly? Size – State sizes; Discuss use of space. Safety – How safe; Possible problems. Function – How well does it do its job? Well made? Materials – What materials used; Is it well made?
16
Introduction In your introduction you need to justify why you have chosen your particular box and how it is linked to the theme. Contents; Construction; Graphics on Box etc. Summary In your summary you need to explain the key points from the sheet, (what have you found out), any decisions you have taken as well as where you are going next. Use bullet points.
