Do now activity #1 What is the difference between a control and a variable? How come water (H2O) is not an element? List 10 examples of the word “organism”.

Section 1-1: the Scientific Method
Unit 1—Molecular Biology Essential Question What is the order that scientists follow when investigating a problem? Learning Targets: List the steps of the scientific method in order. Identify the steps of the scientific method within each lab. Section 1-1: the Scientific Method
3
Write down slides that have a pencil!
4
Don’t forget to chunk your notes!
5
There are 5 steps to the Scientific Method.

8
The Scientific method The 1st step of the Scientific Method is asking a question about a problem that needs a solution.
9
The scientific method The 2nd step of the Scientific Method is forming a hypothesis that could possibly explain the question.
10
The scientific method If a hypothesis is tested over and over again, and it always true, it is considered a theory. This is not a step!
11
The scientific method By the 3rd step of the Scientific Method, an experiment is conducted to test the hypothesis.
12
The scientific method The 4th step of the Scientific Method requires results data to be collected from the experiment.
13
The scientific method Once the 5th step of the Scientific Method is reached, a conclusion is formed about the hypothesis based off the experiment’s results.

Don’t forget to chunk your notes!

Graph #1 Evaluate the graph. Write a conclusion based on the results from this experiment.
16
Graph #2 Evaluate the graph. Write a conclusion based on the results from this experiment.

19
Experimental controls and variables
A control is something in an experiment that does not change.
20
Experimental controls and variables
A variable is something in an experiment that can change.
21
Do now activity #2 During an experiment, what can change?
During an experiment, what does not change? Is a hypothesis the same thing as a theory? Explain. What are the 5 steps of the scientific method in order?
