How you can help with reading at home…
Take home reading – independent reading level Make it ENJOYABLE! Prompt for strategies (bookmark) Put the work on the child COMPREHENSION – authentic retelling discussion (retelling hand)

When your child is stuck, say:
Sound it out Before the Read Look at the pictures before reading the story. When your child is stuck, say: “Look at the picture.” “What would make sense?” (meaning) “Does that sound right?” (grammar) “Does that look right?” (Do the letters match the word?) Read it again and get your mouth ready for the first sound.” “Look for a chunk you know?” (groups of letters) “Try something, and keep reading for more information.” “Reread the sentence.”

Writing Types of writing covered in first grade: Observational and Recount/narrative Our writing program consists of: Writing journal Mini-lessons: 5-10 minutes Rubrics are used to score writing!

How you can help with writing at home…
High frequency words (known in a few seconds- flashcards, etc.) Authentic and engaging writing activities Grocery list Letters/ s Scrap booking Standard and Temporary Spelling SPELLING – Word families/HF words (word wall)/individual words

Number Sense Math Facts and Math Families Shapes Patterns Addition / subtraction concepts Time (analog and digital) / Calendar language Sort and classify objects Graphs (bar graphs, line plots, pie charts, etc.)

Level 1 – Students performing at this level do not exhibit sufficient mastery of first grade knowledge and skills successfully to complete most assignments. Level 2 – Students performing at this level demonstrate inconsistent mastery of knowledge and skills. Level 3 – Students at this level consistently demonstrate mastery of grade level concepts and skills. Level 4 – Students at this level consistently perform in a manner that is clearly beyond the grade-level requirements and expectations.
