5.1 Rate of Change and Slope
I can find rates of change from tables and find slope.

Rate of Change Shows the relationship between two changing quantities. The larger the absolute value of the rate of change, the steeper the line.

Using a Table Is the rate of change found in this table constant? Rate of change = 260 𝑓𝑑 1 π‘šπ‘–π‘› What does this represent? The distance the band marches per minute.

Slope When data are linear, the rate of change is constant. Rate of change is the ratio of vertical change (rise) to horizontal change (run) between two points on a line. Rate of change is also called slope

Using a Graph What is the slope of the line? slope = π‘Ÿπ‘–π‘ π‘’ π‘Ÿπ‘’π‘› = 2 3 A β€œrun” to the right is positive and a β€œrun to the left is negative slope = βˆ’2 6 =βˆ’ 1 3

Slope Formula Pick two points on a line, (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) Then use the slope formula:

Using Points What is the slope of the line through (-1, 0) and (3, -2) Slope = βˆ’2 βˆ’0 3 βˆ’(βˆ’1) Slope = βˆ’2 4 =βˆ’ 1 2
