5.1 Rate of Change and Slope
I can find rates of change from tables and find slope.
2
Rate of Change Shows the relationship between two changing quantities. The larger the absolute value of the rate of change, the steeper the line.
3
Using a Table Is the rate of change found in this table constant? Rate of change = 260 ππ‘ 1 πππ What does this represent? The distance the band marches per minute.
4
Slope When data are linear, the rate of change is constant. Rate of change is the ratio of vertical change (rise) to horizontal change (run) between two points on a line. Rate of change is also called slope
5
Using a Graph What is the slope of the line? slope = πππ π ππ’π = 2 3 A βrunβ to the right is positive and a βrun to the left is negative slope = β2 6 =β 1 3
6
Slope Formula Pick two points on a line, (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) Then use the slope formula:
7
Using Points What is the slope of the line through (-1, 0) and (3, -2) Slope = β2 β0 3 β(β1) Slope = β2 4 =β 1 2
