What needs do you have? Task: Prioritise each of the cards with the most important at the top and the least important at the bottom.

4 Rights What Rights do you have? Task: Look at the Human Rights cards, which do you think are the most important? Explain why.

5 Human Right? For each of the following, say whether you agree or disagree by moving to the correct corner of the room.

8 The world is not owned by any person or government

9 A country is a natural land area that should not be owned by any single person or group

10 Every person in the world has a right to find somewhere safe to live

11 Every person in the world has a right to move from their country if their life is at risk

12 Refugees A refugee is someone who has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion. A refugee may not have what they need. A refugee does not have their Human Rights respected.

13 Task Write down in your own words what we mean by the term ‘refugee’

14 Task In pairs decide which of the statements are descriptions of refugees.

15 Someone that you know that has come from another country

16 Someone in your family, a friend or neighbour that lives in another country.

18 Someone that has left their country because they cannot live safely

19 Someone waiting to be granted permission to live in the country.

20 Someone that has been granted permission to stay in a country

21 Some other terms for you:
Asylum Seeker: Asylum means ‘safe haven’. An ‘Asylum Seeker’ is someone looking for ‘a safe haven’.

22 Illegal Immigrant: Someone who goes to live or work in another country when they do not have the legal right to do this.

23 Internally Displaced:
A person that has been forced to leave their home for the same reasons as a refugee but has sought refuge in another part of their own country.

24 People who leave their own country voluntarily to earn a livelihood.
Economic Migrant: People who leave their own country voluntarily to earn a livelihood.

25 Quiz * Go around the class and choose one person to ask a question. * If they answer incorrectly, ask them another * If they answer correctly move on and find someone else!!

26 Who should be granted Refugee Status?
Coop Learning: Working in groups you are going to Listen to each other read out the card Everyone will participate Discuss who should be granted refugee status, and who should not. You can choose 3 out of the 5 people to grant ‘Refugee Status’ to.

27 Why do people become refugees?
Coop Learning Task: Skill: Sharing Information Learning Intention: To find out why people become refugees. Task: Each person will be given an info sheet about a refugee. You must read the story. Tell another person in your group about the story you have. Listen to theirs. Tell the rest of your group what your partner has told you.
