Summary The San Andreas Fault is a “right-lateral strike-slip” (RLSS) fault. When a “lateral” fault is ALSO a plate boundary it is also called a transform fault Plate tectonics language Lateral faults that are not plate boundaries are just called (right/left- lateral) strike-slip faults.
