1 Marketing Presentation
Introductions: Introduce yourself & session How many of you have competed in a BEST robotics competition? How many of you are new to the BEST robotics competition? (Yay!) The purpose of this presentation is to provide you with some insight as to what you are going to be evaluated on in this category of the competition, to walk through the score sheet, and to be able to ask any questions that you might have. All of the information that we are going to be talking about can be found in your teacher’s Kick-Off packet or on the BEST robotics website in the Awards & Judging Documents (part 1 & 2) and in the score sheet. 2 BEST Program The competition is comprised of two segments
Robotics Competition The BEST Award (optional) Note: The Project Engineering Notebook is required along with the robot for the robot competition The BEST program is split into 2 categories – the Robotics Competition and the BEST Award. The BEST Award is optional for teams to compete for. The Team Exhibit & Interview points contribute to the BEST Award. NOTE: The Project Engineering Notebook is required for EVERY team competing at Bison BEST! Even the teams that are not competing for the BEST Award.

3 BEST Award All teams are eligible for the BEST Award
Judging is based on five criteria (100 points possible) Project Engineering Notebook (30 points) Marketing Presentation (25 points) Team Exhibit and Interviews (20 points) Spirit and Sportsmanship (10 points) Robot Performance (15 points) The Marketing Presentation accounts for 25 of the 100 total points for the BEST Award!

4 Purpose To present information and respond to questions concerning the company’s effectiveness in creating a product ready for market Throughout your Marketing Presentation – you should keep the overall purpose in mind. You want to present information and respond to questions concerning the company’s effectiveness in creating a product that is ready for market.

5 Presentation The team should view themselves as employees of a company that is marketing their product (robot) to a potential buyers or investors (judges) As you develop your presentation – keep in mind that your team should view themselves as employees of a company that is trying to market their product (robot) or potential buyers or investors (judges). Questions to keep in mind as you develop your presentation: How are you going to develop the structure of your company? How are you going to sell your robot to investors or buyers? What is different about YOUR robot? What is going to make the investors/buyers leave with your product at the end of the day?

6 Presentation Investors/Buyers are going to be assessing the following through your presentation: Company demographics Company’s design and manufacturing process Marketing strategies Company’s use of technological resources Overall quality of presentation The investors are going to be assessing the following through your presentation: The company’s demographics, budget, and operations (ex. Company structure and operations, evidence of diversity of employees, evidence of budget that includes sponsorship and expenditures, etc) The company’s design and manufacturing process (engineering process of “design to market”, including a discussion on the advantages of your company’s robot design) Marketing strategies to promote the product (ex. School and community involvement, promotional efforts, etc) The company’s use of technological resources to accomplish the task (ex. CAD, SolidWorks, programming tools, computer simulations, web page development, etc) Overall quality of presentation, including adherence to guidelines for this category

7 Guidelines Minimum of 4 and maximum of 8 students actively participating in presentation Adults are not allowed to participate, including in setting up or taking down of equipment for presentation There must be at least 4 students actively participating in the presentation with a maximum of 8 students. Adults are not allowed to participate in the presentation – including set up or take down of the equipment for the presentation

8 Guidelines Representation by student presenters from more than one grade level is encouraged Videotaping/photographing by team representatives will be allowed during presentation, however the person handling the videotaping will be counted in the 8 person maximum allowed. Audience members are not allowed to videotape or take photos during presentation. Presentation format is the prerogative of the team It is recommended that representation of more than one grade level is present in the presentation. **Videotaping or photography is allowed… however, it must be done by a student team member (NOT an adult or audience member) and this student team member will be counted in the eight student maximum Presentation format is the prerogative of the team – be professional but creative 

9 Equipment You will be provided a
Computer – with flash drive and Microsoft PowerPoint will be downloaded Projector Projection screen Any additional equipment is the team’s responsibility

10 Time Restrictions Teams should check-in 10 minutes prior to scheduled presentation time at the table outside of the presentation room Order and breakdown of presentation time period: 5 minutes: Set-up 12 minutes: Presentation 5 minutes: Q & A with judges 3 minutes: Break-down and clear room There will be a check-In table outside of the Marketing Presentation area – please check-in 10 minutes prior to your scheduled presentation time. You will be given a 5, 3, and 1 minute remaining warning during your presentation.

11 Time Restrictions Teams not requiring set-up or take down may utilize that time for their presentations (total presentation time up to 20 minutes) Scenario Scenario 2 5 minutes – Set-up 12 minutes – Presentation 5 minutes – Q & A with Judges 3 minutes – Break down 20 minutes – Presentation 5 minutes – Q & A with Judges You are given up to 5 minutes for set-up, 12 minutes for presentation, 3 minutes for tear-down and clearing the room, and a mandatory 5 minutes for Q&A with the judges. Teams not requiring set-up or tear-down time may utilize this time for their presentation – for a total presentation time up to 20 minutes. (5 minutes of Q&A are mandatory)

12 Important Information
BISON BEST - Each team will be assigned a presentation time slot on Friday, October 22nd between 1:00 – 5:00PM and you will be given this time prior to game day

18 Tips for Public Speaking
1. Know your material 2. Practice! Practice! Practice! 3. Know the audience 4. Relax 5. Visualize yourself giving the speech 6. Realize that people want you to succeed 7. Don’t apologize 8. Look sharp (but don’t wear distracting clothing) 9. Don’t chew gum 10. Have a back-up plan in case technology fails

19 Tips for Using PowerPoint
Don’t read the slides to your audience! Don’t talk to the screen – face the judges Make your text large Choose colors that make the text easier to read Use bullet points instead of full sentences Minimize movement of text and graphics Avoid charts and diagrams that are hard to see

20 Handling Q&A Plan for them… Anticipate questions
Clarify/repeat the question Don’t be defensive It’s OK to pause and think Divide complex questions

21 Gestures & Movement Eye contact Smile! Facial expressions
Motivated movements Hand gestures Avoid distracting mannerisms
