TBT – Prevention of skin disease – It’s in your hands

What do I need to know? Skin can be damaged in many ways, by the work we do and the materials we use – it is called contact dermatitis when caused by substances at work If you develop contact dermatitis this could mean that you are unable to continue in your job Ask you Manager to brief you on the COSHH assessment for the substances, skin irritants or sensitizers your exposed to when at work. - Examples could be cement, bitumen products, some resins, glues, paints, fuel and oils.

What do I need look for ? Affects the hands, forearms and legs – where substances come in contact with skin Redness/swelling of hands/fingers. Cracking of skin on hands/fingers. Blisters on hands/fingers. Flaking/scaling of skin. Itching of hands/fingers with cracks.

What should I do ? Initially good hand hygiene and moisturise skin regularly – see hand outs attached. If you have identified skin issues, and you are unsure what is causing it See your GP if you get a skin condition that does not go away – he can ensure you receive the correct diagnosis and treatment If you get a skin condition that does not go away Inform your site manager – tRIIO employees - he/she may refer you to Occupational Health for assessment Subcontractors - the site manager may refer you to your employer.

What I can do to prevent skin disease?
Make sure you know the substances you are working with –ask your manager if unsure Avoid working with irritant or allergic substances if you suffer from eczema or allergic rashes – it will make them flare up or make them worse Always wear protective clothing when advised and provided
Use the skincare station on site before and after work – this regime will protect your skin Get first aid treatment for all cuts grazes and keep them covered at all time
