Energy!
2
How much do you know about energy?
3
CANADA AND ENERGY Largest users of energy in the world (per capita)
Canada gets most of its energy from fossil fuels Small population is spread thin and energy is required for transportation
4
Turbine Energy Most forms of energy creation are just different versions of getting a turbine generator to spin. Coal, steam, hydro-electric, nuclear, gas, and wind all use this basic idea.
5
Thermal electricity Steam is used to turn turbines to create electricity Steam is created by burning fossil fuels Cheap but creates a lot of pollution $1.4 trillion in damages per year globally
7
Nuclear Uranium atoms are split, releasing energy which is used to boil water to turn turbines
8
Nuclear When everything is working right, nuclear emits less radiation in a year than you get from eating 1 banana
9
Nuclear problems Things don’t always go right.
A tsunami in 2011 caused the Fukushima power plant to melt down Over 100,000 people were evacuated from their homes The Chernobyl power plant had a meltdown in 1986, and the area is still unlivable
10
Hydroelectric Use moving water to power turbines
Best done by damming the river to store the potential energy behind the dam The land covered by the new reservoir is a source of greenhouse gases and mercury
12
Renewables People are looking for different ways to get energy which pollute less
13
Wind Wind turbines create very little pollution but take up a lot of space for a little power Some concerns for noise, wildlife, and power consistency
14
Solar Light hitting certain metals causes electrons to move, creating electricity Very expensive to build, but getting cheaper and more efficient
15
Solar thermal Power plant
Mirrors direct sunlight to a central tower, which heats a liquid to spin a turbine
16
Geothermal Uses heat of the Earth to heat water
Very expensive to build (pipes have to be drilled very, very deep) But after initial cost, the energy is more or less free. Usable in homes as well as plants
