19 Summary Regulatory agencies exist in order to keep people safe.
They focus on certain things, such as food or airline safety.

20 Regulatory Agencies Remember that the job of the executive branch of government is to ENFORCE laws. Think of all the laws in this country—it would be impossible for President Trump to enforce these all by himself. In order to make his job easier the president has two important tools: regulatory agencies and executive orders. A regulatory agency is an agency in the government that makes and enforces rules. The goals of regulatory agencies are to protect consumers and keep citizens safe. A consumer is anyone who buys things.

21 Regulatory Agencies We have regulatory agencies because without them businesses would not have many rules. Without many rules, businesses may do things that could harm people, just to save money or because it is easier. Before the Food and Drug Administration existed many people bought and ate meat that was rotten. There was nothing that prevented meat companies from selling bad meat, so the companies were able to get away with it. Many people got sick and even died from eating bad meat.

22 Food and Drug Administration (FDA):
Regulatory Agencies Food and Drug Administration (FDA): The FDA protects people by making rules for what food and drugs can be sold. In order for a drug to be sold it must go through lots of tests by the FDA to make sure it is safe. The FDA also monitors food makers to make sure the food they are selling is clean and will not hurt people.

23 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA):
Regulatory Agencies Federal Aviation Administration (FAA): The goal of the FAA is to make safety rules for airlines and make airports more secure. The FAA has made rules about how long pilots can fly without taking a break to sleep; this is to make sure pilots are alert when they are flying passengers around the country.

24 Federal Trade Commission (FTC):
Regulatory Agencies Federal Trade Commission (FTC): The FTC monitors businesses to make sure they aren’t scamming or annoying their customers. The FTC deals with incidents where a product hurts someone or when a company lies about what a product does.

25 Regulatory Agencies Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA): FEMA helps to protect people during natural disasters like earthquakes, tornados, and hurricanes. FEMA also helps communities recover after they have experienced a natural disaster.

26 Regulatory Agencies Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): The EPA makes sure that our air and water are clean. The EPA monitors businesses to make sure they don’t pollute too much. The EPA also cleans land and water that has been made dirty by pollution.

27 Federal Communications Commission (FCC):
Regulatory Agencies Federal Communications Commission (FCC): The FCC makes rules for television and radio. The FCC decides what shows are rated and what kind of language is allowed to be used on television and radio.
