2 Topic 1: Introducing Natural Hazards
WALT: To define and categorise natural hazards. WILF: All students will define the term natural hazards and locate some globally. Most students will analyse and represent hazard data on a graph. Some students will explain the difference between natural hazards/disasters and natural/man-made hazards.

3 Starter: hazards worksheet
Answer questions 2, 3, 4 (and extension) What was your heading for these words? Share your reasons for ranking worst to least dangerous with the person sitting next to you. Did you agree on the worst? Did any hazards fit into more than one group?

4 Task: Graph skills Look at the data sheet showing the top 20 deadliest natural hazards. Rank in order of the highest – lowest number of deaths. Represent the top 10 on a graph – bar chart. If you need help, look at this example graph. REMEMBER TO LABEL YOUR AXIS!

6 Task: Map skills Continue with instructions on work sheet.
On a blank world map identify the top 20 (aim for top 10 if that takes too long) deadliest natural hazards. Extension: Add key information, describe distribution and add key words.

7 Plenary: In pairs discuss the difference between a HAZARD and a DISASTER
In your book write down the definition of a natural hazard. Write down the definition of a natural disaster. Extension: Can you identify any man-made disasters. Why are they man-made?
